Lido di Jesolo – Italy

Lido di Jesolo, the Adriatic beach resort near Venice, on a bright summer day. The town is a grid of white hotels and shady avenues of umbrella pines, with shops and a few tall towers rising above the sunshades.

On the beach there are rows of blue-striped umbrellas, sunbathers on wide sand, kites that fill the sky with colour, and a cart with gelati and granite. Long wooden breakwaters run out into the calm water, with swimmers wading around them and a pirate-ship boat for the tourists. It is an easy, slow place, built entirely for the sea.
