Barcelona – Spain
Barcelona, with a long stop among the street performers of Las Ramblas: living statues in gold and silver, a cow and a vampire, capoeira dancers, break dancers stretching on the pavement and a man in a black box startling passers-by.
Before that, the city itself. Gaudí at every turn, from the wavy stone of Casa Milà and the scaly roof of Casa Batlló to the cranes over the Sagrada Família and the leaning stone colonnades of Park Güell. Then the Gothic quarter with its bridge across a narrow street and the openwork spire of the cathedral, the Columbus column by the harbour with the red cable car passing above, the marina with its forest of masts, and the seafront at night with the giant crustacean lit above the promenade.
