Vienna – Austria
A few days in Vienna under a mostly grey sky, which suits the city: gilded eagles, green copper domes and cream facades look best against clouds. I walked from the Gothic roof tiles of St Stephen’s through the Hofburg gateways, past white horse carriages waiting on the cobbles, to the Karlskirche with its twin columns reflected in a pool.
Out at Schönbrunn the yellow palace sits above clipped hedges and flower beds, with the hilltop colonnade at the far end. Back in town I rode the red trams, ate apple strudel, and found small oddities: a mobile phone tied to a hammer on a signpost, a statue wrapped in white cloth. The last pictures are from the Prater Ferris wheel and from the streets at dusk.
